Sitting Blues

$495.00

In this intimate self-portrait, I turn inward, my body folded into a gesture of vulnerability and self-protection. Bathed in deep blue tones, the figure emerges from darkness, suspended between concealment and revelation. The image invites contemplation of solitude, emotional exposure, and the quiet human longing for comfort, connection, and self-acceptance.

In Sitting Blues, I use my own body to explore the delicate relationship between vulnerability, solitude, and the human need for tenderness. Seated with my body curled inward, my face concealed and one hand resting across my opposite shoulder, I inhabit a posture that might suggest withdrawal, self-protection, or the simple act of offering oneself comfort.

The deep blue palette creates an atmosphere of melancholy and stillness. Light moves gently across the contours of my back, shoulders, and arms, revealing the interplay of muscle, bone, and skin before dissolving into the surrounding darkness. The indistinct boundaries between body and background create a sense of suspension, as though the figure occupies a space somewhere between the physical world and an interior emotional landscape.

Although this is a self-portrait, it is not intended primarily as a representation of my identity. By concealing my face and allowing the body to emerge only partially from darkness, I hope to create space for viewers to recognize something of their own experience. The gesture of the hand across my shoulder introduces a particular ambiguity. It might almost belong to another person, offering an embrace. Yet it is my own, suggesting that even in solitude, we retain the capacity to extend tenderness toward ourselves.

There is no single emotional narrative here. The figure might be grieving, resting, remembering, or simply listening inwardly. What interests me is the way these experiences can coexist: the desire to withdraw and the longing to connect, the instinct to protect ourselves and the courage to remain open.

Ultimately, Sitting Blues is a meditation on the quiet complexity of being human. Through the vulnerability of my own body, I hope to suggest something universal: that fragility and resilience are not opposites, and that even in our most solitary moments, the possibility of compassion remains.
