What the Eyes Remember

$495.00

This is a copy of a mixed-media work. It explores the uncertain territory between seeing and remembering. Layers of ink, watercolor, and pastel suggest eyes, faces, and bodily forms without allowing them to resolve completely. Brilliant yellows and reds push forward from deep blacks, while small passages of blue open unexpected spaces within the composition. The image invites the viewer to find something recognizable, then question whether it was ever really there.

See It In Your Space

This piece is 36 × 47.5 inches. Pick a room to see it at scale.

What the Eyes Remember began with the possibilities of ink, watercolor, and pastel—materials that can be controlled but also allowed to bleed, overlap, obscure, and surprise. Within those layers, recognizable forms seem continually on the verge of appearing. An eye, a face, perhaps more than one figure can be glimpsed, only to dissolve again into color and gesture.

That uncertainty is central to the image. We instinctively search for faces and meaning in what we see, assembling fragments into something familiar. Memory works in much the same way. It rarely returns the past intact. Instead, it offers pieces—an expression, a color, a sensation, a moment of light—from which we construct something that feels whole.

The intense reds and yellows give the work an almost interior heat, while the black passages interrupt and divide the composition. Flecks and pools of blue appear near the edges like openings into another space. The rough, irregular border reinforces the sense that this is not a contained scene so much as something momentarily brought to the surface.

The title What the Eyes Remember intentionally leaves open a question: are these things the eyes actually saw, or what the mind has subsequently made of them? The image occupies that space between perception and recollection, where forms emerge, disappear, and perhaps become most compelling precisely because they cannot be fully named.
